  • Arizona and West Virginia are both making a late push at 2010 shooting guard Doron Lamb.

The 6-foot-4 Lamb, a Queens, N.Y., native playing at Oak Hill (Va.) Academy, will likely visit Arizona in early January, either Jan. 7-9 or 8-10.

“Probably, I don’t know the date yet,” Lamb said by phone from Paducah, Ky. where Oak Hill (7-0) is at the Marshall County Hoopfest for Saturday’s game with Jackson (Miss.) Calloway.

Lamb, the No. 3 shooting guard in the Class of 2010, said he had watched Arizona play recently in the Maui Invitational.

“I watched Arizona play in Hawaii but I don’t know,” he said.

Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said West Virginia was also making a late push for Lamb.

NEW YORK — One of the key matchups to watch in today’s St. John’s-Duke game (3:30, ESPN2) is the one between wing players D.J. Kennedy of the Johnnies and Kyle Singler of Duke.

The 6-foot-8 Singler leads Duke at 17.1 points a game and adds 6.7 rebounds.

The 6-6 Kennedy, nicknamed “Big Play” and with a tattoo to that effect on his neck, will get the assignment of covering Singler. Kennedy leads the Johnnies with 17.7 points and is shooting a team-best 56 percent.

“He’s probably one of the best players in the country,” Kennedy said of Singler. “He can do a lot. He’s 6-9, he can play the wing, he can shoot. He’s got a lot of moves. He’s a great player. I think it will be a great matchup for me….I’m really looking forward to the matchup.”

“It’s one of our best perimeter defenders guarding probably their best all-around perimeter player,” St. John’s coach Norm Roberts said of Kennedy. “[Singler] can score in so many different ways, but D.J. has size, too. D.J. being 6-6, Singler 6-8. D.J.’s got pretty good reach, he’s strong.

Fordham point guard Jio Fontan is still mulling whether or not to return to the team under interim head coach Jared Grasso.

“Jio wont be playing today [Saturday[. He’s coming home today [Saturday] and we’re going to have a good talk about what’s been going on the last 48 hours and go from there,” said Jorge Fontan, Jio’s father.

Fordham plays its first game under Grasso Saturday night at Rose Hill Gym at 7 against Bowling Green.

One day after Fontan declared he was leaving the team, Fordham fired coach Dereck Whittenburg on Thursday.
