Now that the Knicks appear ready to lock up Amar’e Stoudemire for five years, they are working on landing a point guard to run their offense.
The franchise has reached out to Raymond Felton, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound unrestricted free agent who spent the last five seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats.
“If you add Amar’e and you get Raymond that’s a heck of a coup,” Tony Dutt, Felton’s agent, said in a phone interview. “Raymond can definitely run a team. Just like Amar’e has [Steve] Nash you need a guy there that’s able to run a team at a high level.”
Felton averaged 11.8 points and 5.0 assists last season and has career averages of 13.3 points and 6.4 assists.
The Knicks have second-year point guard Toney Douglas on the roster but he is viewed as more of a backup.
Dutt said there were “six other” teams involved with Felton at this point, but “I don’t really want to name them at this point.”
Two of those teams are believed to be the Nets and Detroit Pistons.
Felton and Dutt plan to come to New York early next week to meet with Knicks’ brass.
“We plan on making a trip up there next week sometime,” Dutt said.
In the meantime, Dutt, like everyone else, is waiting on LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to make up their minds.
“I think that’s what everybody’s waiting for,” Dutt said.
“For us, the sooner, the better. A lot of the teams that we’re looking at are teams that are looking at the Big 3. We understand the process and it may take a little bit more time.”
