St. John’s coach Steve Lavin has embarked upon his cross-country recruiting tour and spent Thursday in Las Vegas visiting Amir Garrett before visiting Dominick Pointer today (Friday).
“They came by campus,” Findlay Prep assistant coach Todd Simon said of Lavin and assistant Rico Hines.
The 6-foot-7 Garrett cut his list to St. John’s and Oregon and then Tweeted he had made his decision. Simon said his recruitment is still unfolding.
“Both Oregon and St. John’s have many scholarships to give so I imagine both will stay on him,” Simon said.
The Johnnies have eight to give, and the Ducks now have two after getting a verbal commitment Thursday from Oakland shooting guard Jabari Brown.
“I think Amir’s going to be thorough with his decision,” Simon said. “I think he will know when the time is right.”
As for Pointer, he is down to St. John’s, West Virginia and Michigan and visits Michigan Oct. 15.
“It’s whatever’s best for me,” the 6-5 Pointer, out of Winston-Salem (N.C.) Quality Education Academy, said recently. “I’ll sit down with my parents and see what we come up with.”
In other St. John’s news, Brewster (N.H.) Prep point guard Naadir Tharpe will visit Oct. 29, according to Brewster coach Jason Smith. Tharpe will also visit Oklahoma Oct. 15 and Kansas Oct. 22.
