Alex Murphy, the No. 1 small forward in the Class of 2012, is set to leave Saturday for an unofficial visit to Duke this weekend.

“We’re going down for the Maryland game Sunday night,” Jay Murphy, Alex’s father, said by phone. “We come back Monday.”

Along with Duke, the 6-foot-8, 210-pound Murphy is considering Florida, Boston College, West Virginia, Kansas and North Carolina.

“Those are the ones we talked about,” Jay said.

Kentucky coach John Calipari came Wednesday to watch Murphy and his 7-foot St. Mark’s (Mass.) teammate, Kaleb Tarczewski.

“Kentucky, they were there the other day,” Jay said. “That’s something we’re gonna talk about.”

Still, Jay said, “No other visits at this point are set up.”

Duke and head coach Mike Krzyzewski appear to have a strong interest in Murphy, whose older brother, Erik, plays for Florida.

“They’ve been on him hard from the beginning,” Jay said. “Most other schools have, too. He had a really good summer. Now people follow you.”

Alex has been to Cameron Indoor for various AAU events, but this weekend was an opportunity to take in a game and see the campus.

“We’ve been down there a couple times,” Jay said. “He played in Bob Gibbons. He’s played some games in Cameron for AAU tourneys but he’s never seen a game there.

“This is something he wanted to do.”

As for when a decision might come, it could happen at anytime.

“As far as time-frame at this point, I don’t think he has one,” Jay said. “I don’t think it’s gonna be next week but it could be this spring, summer or in the fall.”
