NEW YORK — Sean Grennan became the latest player to commit to the future of Seton Hall when he pledged to the Pirates over the weekend.

“I think it’s a spectacular fit,” Grennan, a senior at Monsignor Donovan High School in Toms River, N.J., told ZAGSBLOG Wednesday. “To be able to play in the Big East like that is such a great opportunity. It’s kind of something I’ve dreamed about since a little kid. Day in and day out, you’re going up against some of the greatest coaches in college basketball.

“The school itself, it’s a great school academically. The opportunities outside of that are unlimited. It’s a great thing, and I’m really excited.”

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound combo guard said he chose the Pirates over interest from Vermont, La Salle, Charlotte, Fordham and Tulane.

He is ranked among the top 12 seniors in New Jersey by NJHoops.com

Grennan initially committed to Davidson and coach Bob McKillop last July, but wasn’t admitted academically.

“Two professors didn’t pass me through on the board, just due to variations on the grades,” Grennan said.

Davidson’s loss turns out to be Seton Hall’s gain.

Grennan becomes head coach Kevin Willard’s fourth commit for 2011, joining guards Freddie Wilson, Aaron Cosby and Haralds Karlis, all of whom signed NLI’s.

“Sean is a very good ballhandler who sees the floor very well,” Jay Gomes of NJHoops.com said. “He can deliver passes off the dribble with either hand. He is a very good shooter with good range. He has good court savvy and with increased strength will compete with the other incoming frosh for court time next season.”

Said Grennan: “I think I’m going to come in and play the point guard and take care of the ball. I think I bring a very high IQ on the court as far as awareness, when to make the extra pass, when a great shot is, and when you’ve got to control the game and get it out. And when it’s getting a little crazy, to slow it down and take control of the game.”

Jordan Theodore will be a senior next season, with Cosby and Grennan able to back him up.

“Jordan’s been playing well,” Grennan said. “He’s going to be the leading guard next year. I think me and Aaron will be there just complementing him in whatever is necessary.”

Next year will mark the dawn of a new era at Seton Hall.

Jeremy Hazell, Keon Lawrence, Jeff Robinson, Eniel Polynice, Jamel Jackson and likely Herb Pope will all depart, leaving Theodore and current frosh Fuquan Edwin as the team’s leaders.

“I think it’s a great opportunity,” Grennan said. “Yes, we’re losing a lot. But I just think it’s so exciting that a ton of new guys are coming in and this team’s building around a young squad.”
