  • Walsh Declines Comment on Latest Anthony Report

NEW YORK — Donnie Walsh got a hit on his Blackberry at midnight on Saturday when someone asked him to comment on the latest Carmelo Anthony report.

According to ESPN.com, the Knicks and Denver Nuggets are discussing a three-team trade that would send Anthony to New York before the Feb. 24 trade deadline.

The Knicks would also reportedly send Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to Minnesota, while the Timberwolves would deal Corey Brewer and a first-round pick to the Nuggets. Denver would also get Wilson Chandler from the Knicks.

Asked if he thought it would take three teams to swing such a deal, Walsh said Sunday before the Knicks hosted the Philadelphia 76ers at MSG: “No comment. I don’t know. I’m not in the crystal ball.”

The three-team deal has “always been discussed,” said a source with knowledge of the situation.

Walsh acknowledged the obvious, that he is in touch with league executives about improving his team.

“I don’t think we have anything going but at least we’re getting a feeling of possibilities,” he said. “We have a better feeling for what’s gonna happen.”

Asked if he felt good about the chance for a deal, he said: “I don’t feel good or bad. These things take two to tango so I have no real knowledge of what other teams will do. But we’re out there looking and seeing if we can do something.”

The Knicks (25-24) have lost 10 of 14 entering Sunday’s tilt, so Walsh is “trying to analyze” whether his team needs an infusion of talent or can stabilize itself as constituted.

Timofey Mozgov recently re-entered the Knicks’ lineup as the starting center, but that hasn’t made Walsh less likely to seek another big man.

“It doesn’t make me less likely,  but it’s welcome,” he said. “You’ve got to have more than one big guy. You’ve got to have a number of big guys.”

Still, Walsh said he thinks the team, as presently constituted, can make a playoff run.

“I also think that our team can work itself back into a position where they can win, so that’s what I want to see,” he said.

Head coach Mike D’Antoni said his team will need at least 40 wins to make the postseason.

“Historically, if you can get in the 40s you should be able to get into it,’ he said.
