Angelo Chol is headed to the desert.

The 6-foot-9, 210-pound Chol out of San Diego Hoover announced for Arizona over Kansas and North Carolina Thursday at 12:45 local time at his high school.

The native of the Sudan joins point guard Josiah Turner of Quality Education  (N.C.), shooting guard Nick Johnson of Findlay Prep (Nev.) and power forward Sidiki Johnson of Oak Hill (Va.) in Sean Miller’s 2011 haul.

Chol is the No. 8 center in the Class of 2011, per Rivals, and should help the Wildcats replace Derrick Williams if he heads to the NBA.

In 28 games this season, Chol is averaging 23.4 points, 14.8 rebounds, and 8.1 blocked shots. He stands 10 points shy of 2,000 for his career.

Chol scored 40 or more points twice this year including a high of 41 vs. St. Joseph (Santa Maria).

Against El Centro (Calif.) Southwest, he put up 40 points, 19 rebounds and 15 blocks.

His 337 blocked shots in 2008-09 is the national record for a single season, according to his coach, Ollie Goulston.

“Angelo is a long and athletic shot blocker and rebounder who can change the game in the paint on both ends of the court,” recruiting guru Van Coleman told the Tucson Citizen. “He averages near a triple-double every night in high school versus double- and triple-team schemed defenses.

“But, what has really started to come into focus for him this season is his offensive game, where he has learned to use his length to score over opponents on the block with a solid jump hook and use his quickness to beat defenders to the rim and finish with highlight dunks or kiss off the glass. No doubt, he will compliment the face-up talents of Sidiki Johnson with his ability to catch and finish around the basket.”

Arizona’s class is currently ranked No. 9 nationally by Rivals but could move up to No. 5, according to national recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer. That jump, in part, is due to the improved play of Nick Johnson, who is averaging 17.5 points, 4 assists and 2.7 steals for Findlay.
