  • Charles Jenkins of Hofstra won the 78th Haggerty Award as the 2010-11 All-Met Division I men’s college basketball player of the year.

Jenkins, a senior guard from Queens, N.Y., won for the third consecutive season, becoming only the third player in the history of the award to win it three times. The others were Jim McMillian of Columbia (1968-69-70) and Chris Mullin of St. John’s (1983-84-85).

UConn wing Jeremy Lamb will return to school for his sophomore season instead of testing the NBA waters.

“Jeremy will be back at UConn,” his father, Rolando Lamb, told SNY.tv by text.

The 6-foot-5 Lamb averaged just 9.6 points during the regular season, but his stock exploded as UConn won 11 straight postseason games — five in five days to capture the Big East Tournament and six more to win UConn’s third NCAA championship since 1999.

Lakers forward and former New Jersey high school standout Derrick Caracter was arrested in New Orleans, accused of public drunkenness and shoving a cashier at a pancake restaurant.

Police said Caracter, 22, was arrested early Sunday and booked into jail on charges of battery, public drunkenness and resisting arrest.

The former Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick and Fitchburg (Mass.) Notre Dame Prep standout allegedly grabbed and shoved the cashier at an International House of Pancakes after he was refused service and became belligerent. The woman wasn’t injured.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — The Knicks have until Friday to exercise their $14.2 million team option on point guard Chauncey Billups, but after meeting with president Donnie Walsh and head coach Mike D’Antoni Monday Billups said he wasn’t sure what his future holds.

“We’ll all know shortly,” Billups said. “I’m hoping to be back. I want to be back. I loved being a Knick this year, it was a great time. I would love to be a part of bringing championship-caliber basketball back to the city, and hopefully I’ll have that opportunity.”

Billups said he planned to remain in touch with his agent, Andy Miller, “the next few days” to learn his fate.

GREENBURGH, N.Y.Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire want to “win now” and believe that Mike D’Antoni and Donnie Walsh are the men to help make it happen.

That was their message when the two stars met with the media a day after the Knicks were swept by the Boston Celtics in Game 4 Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

“Hell, yeah I need to win,” Anthony said. “From my own personal, I want to win. Nothing else even matters to me right now when we talk about basketball, but winning.

Following his weekend visit to St. John’s, God’s Gift Achiuwa plans on announcing his college choice this week.

The 6-foot-8 power forward from Erie (N.Y.) Community College is down to the Johnnies, Cincinnati and Washington.

“He’s gonna do it this week,” Erie coach Alex Nwora said Monday by phone.

“He said, ‘I don’t want any more visits. I visited enough schools and I’m going to make my decision. I’m getting fed up with all the traveling and all the phone calls.’ He wants to sit down and make a decision.”

NEW YORK –– The 2010-11 Knicks season is officially over, swept away by the Boston Celtics in four games.

After Sunday’s 101-89 loss in Game 4, the Knicks still haven’t won a playoff game since April 29, 2001, a stretch of 10 straight postseason losses.

Looking forward, Knick fans know that the 2011-12 incarnation of their team will revolve around Carmelo Anthony and a healthy Amar’e Stoudemire. But beyond that, a slew of questions loom.

Will Donnie Walsh return as president? Will Mike D’Antoni still be the coach next fall?
