  • Indiana self reported a secondary NCAA rules violation related to elite shooting guard Gary Harris, ESPN.com reported.

The school issued a statement conceding that head coach Tom Crean committed a violation by visiting an unnamed student-athlete in Indianapolis Oct. 6. The contact period ended Oct. 5, meaning coaches could not meet with players after that date.

“Coach Crean immediately reported an inadvertent recruiting contact violation to our compliance office, and we are following our normal procedures,” the school said in a statement.

Shabazz Muhammad plans to visit Kentucky and USC this month and is still eyeing a springtime decision.

The 6-foot-6 Muhammad will be one of several high-profile recruits at Kentucky this weekend for Big Blue Madness, joining Alex Poythress, DaJuan Coleman and Willie Cauley.

Kentucky coach John Calipari joined assistants Kenny Payne and Orlando Antigua and Duke coaches Mike Krzyzewski, Jeff Capel and Steve Wojciechowski during an Oct. 5 workout at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman.

“We like Kentucky, that’s why they’re getting an official,” Ron Holmes, Muhammad’s father, told SNY.tv by phone Tuesday night.

If Texas Christian had stayed in the Big East Conference, the Horned Frogs’ closest road basketball game would have been some 1,137 miles away — against South Florida.

Now that TCU will join the Big 12 next July, the Frogs can look forward to bus trips to Austin and Waco.

Needless to say, TCU coach Jim Christian likes the easier travel schedule.

“Obviously, geographically for us, it’s going to be nice,” Christian told SNY.tv by phone.

Notre Dame forward Tim Abromaitis must sit the first four games of the upcoming season after playing in two exhibition games during the 2008-09 campaign.

In his sophomore year (’08-’09), Abromaitis played in Notre Dame’s first two exhibition games against Briar Cliff (Oct. 31) and Stonehill (Nov. 9) and then was withheld from competition for the remainder of the season in order to preserve an extra year of eligibility.

Under NCAA rules, and specifically Bylaw 14.2.3.1.3, freshman student-athletes are allowed to participate in preseason exhibition contests and still preserve the entire year of eligibility. The Bylaw, however, does not provide the same exception for returning student-athletes in their sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Therefore, Abromaitis technically used a season of eligibility when he participated in those two preseason exhibition contests during that year.
