  • Temple is headed to the Big East for all sports in 2012, according to a report by Brett McMurphy of CBSSports.com.

The league desperately needs an eighth football program for 2012 to offset the loss of West Virginia, which paid a $20 million settlement to leave as of July 1.

One source told CBSSports.com that Temple to the Big East in 2012 “is done.”

The Big East will then have eight football and 16 basketball teams in 2012.

By the 2013-14 season, the Big East will swell to an 18-team basketball league.

Temple will another quality basketball program — the No. 22 Owls are 21-5 — and another program supported by Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who also endorsed Memphis. Memphis will join in all sports in 2013

UConn coach Jim Calhoun will undergo a surgical procedure Monday to help alleviate the spinal stenosis that has forced him to take a  medical  leave of absence, the school announced Wednesdsay.

Calhoun is expected to be hospitalized for one or two nights, followed by a recovery period at home. He will not coach the Huskies’ games against Syracuse on Saturday or at Providence on Tuesday, the seventh and eighth games that the Hall of Fame coach has missed due to the lower back condition. His coaching status will then be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

Baron Davis says he wasn’t mimicking smoking a joint after making his first 3-pointer as a Knick Monday against the Nets.

The gesture was captured by Deadspin in the above screen grab.

On Tuesday, Davis Tweeted: “To clear up rumors. I was kissing my hands after I shot the 3 last nite. Kissing the 3 was all I was doing. Stop fishing and hating plz.”

Davis’s agent, Todd Ramasar, told The New York Times Davis was “blowing kisses” at his successful 3-point shot in the Knicks’ 100-92 loss.
