NEW YORK — At 6 feet, 9 inches, John Isner is a very big man with a big serve and a big forehand.
As the highest-seeded American here at the U.S. Open, Isner faces some big expectations, too.
The No. 9 seed, he has an excellent chance to reached at least the semifinals of a Grand Slam event for the first time in his career because none of the Big Three — Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray — are in his quarter. Instead, No. 4 David Ferrer is the highest seed in Isner’s portion of the draw.
“There’s more pressure on John Isner than there’s ever been at any event he’s ever played because of the expectations on him,” ESPN analyst John McEnroe said before Isner survived a 6-3, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (9) battle with journeyman Xavier Malisse that lasted 2 hours, 56 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
