METUCHEN, N.J. — If Karl Towns’s decision to attend Kentucky and to reclassify to 2014 proved anything Tuesday morning, it is that John Calipari continues to dominate the recruiting world like no one before.

Calipari is ruling his fellow coaches on the recruiting trail the way Kramer did when he dominated the dojo.

Now with the 7-foot-1 1/2, 234-pound Towns in the fold for 2014, he says he wants to help Calipari — whose team is currently unranked — pursue another national title.

“Now we’re going to talk about what we going to have to do to get that national championship,” said Towns, 17. “You never play to lose, you always play to win. I sound like Herm Edwards a little bit, but it’s true.”

METUCHEN, N.J. — Karl Towns tried to keep the suspense for as long as he could.

He narrowed down his list of schools to a final three and wouldn’t even tell his mother, Jackie Towns, what the final decision was when he woke up Tuesday morning.

But in the end, the 7-foot-1 1/2, 234-pound sophomore out of St. Joe’s-Metuchen did what many expected he would — he pulled the trigger for Kentucky, but not before announcing he will reclassify to the Class of 2014.

Towns reclassifying to 2014 would make him eligible for the 2015 NBA Draft. Scout.com has moved Towns to No. 7 in their Class of 2014 rankings as a result.

“I have two decisions to announce today,” Towns said at a press conference before the entire school in the St. Joe’s gym. “First is that I will be reclassifying to the 2014 class and the second decision is that I will be playing basketball at the University of Kentucky.”

Towns played for Kentucky coach John Calipari and assistant Orlando Antigua last summer on the Dominican Republic National Team that played Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony and Team USA in Las Vegas. In May 2011, SNY.tv wrote about Calipari’s recruiting edge vis-a-vis Towns and the Dominican team.

Towns also visited Kentucky just last week to see the campus and the Wildcats’ victory over LIU Brooklyn.

http://www.nba.com/media/act_carmelo_anthony.jpgCarmelo Anthony was named the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week after he helped lead the Knicks to a 3-1 mark, averaging a league-best 29.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.

Anthony scored over 30 points in two contests.  In New York’s 106-99 home victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, Anthony scored a game-high 34 points, and added six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.

“I’m healthy,” Anthony said Sunday when talking about the “MVP” chants he received at Madison Square Garden. “Not make any excuses on last year but I  wasn’t 100 percent healthy. I’m healthy this year. As a team we’re healthy and we’re winning basketball games and we’re doing it in a great fashion.”

But look all the way to the bottom and you won’t see Kentucky’s name for the first time since John Calipari became coach of the Wildcats.

Indiana, which has been No. 1 since the preseason poll, saw its lead over Duke shrink. The Hoosiers (8-0) received 45 first-place votes Monday from the 65-member national media panel, two fewer than last week.

Duke (8-0) for the second straight week had the other first-place votes. The Blue Devils beat Ohio State last week giving them wins over teams ranked second, third and fourth in a span of 15 days. The other such run was Arizona beating teams ranked first, fourth and fifth from the regional semifinals to the NCAA championship game in 1997, a span of 11 days.

The only Big East schools to lose in the Challenge were Marquette, Rutgers and Seton Hall.

Meantime, the league announced its Player and Rookie of the Week on Monday and, ironically, both are from schools that won’t be in the Big East next season.

BIG EAST Player of the Week

    JAMES SOUTHERLAND, Syracuse, F, Sr.

The Queens, N.Y., native scored a career-high 35 points — the most by a BIG EAST player in a game this season — to lead Syracuse to a 91-82 win at Arkansas as part of the SEC-BIG EAST Challenge. He shot 12-of-17 from the field and 9-of-13 from 3-point range, tying Gerry McNamara’s school record for 3-pointers in a game. Southerland leads the BIG EAST in 3-pointers made (3.6 per game) and is sixth in the conference in scoring at 19.2 ppg.
