ROSELLE, N.J. — Dakari Johnson and Kevin Boyle’s first visit to the Garden State after two years was a success.

Montverde (Fl.) Academy defeated St. Peter’s Prep (N.J.), 89-62, in the Holiday Hoops for Troops event at Roselle Catholic.

From the onset, Montverde, ranked the No. 1 team in the Nation by ESPN.com, lived up to the hype.

Johnson, the No. 1 center in the country, was a dominant force and finished with 16 points, even while sitting out the fourth quarter.

“It felt great to come home and play because my family really wanted to see me play live,” said the 6-foot-11 big man, who has narrowed his college choices to Kentucky, Syracuse and Georgetown.

    GREENBURGH, N.Y.

With the Knicks getting more bad news than good news regarding injuries this season, Wednesday was considered a good day.

One day after making his season debut, Amar’e Stoudemire was back on the practice court working to get back into the flow of the Knicks’ system.

Stoudemire, in his first game since the pre-season, scored six points and played 17 minutes last night in the Knicks’ 105-100 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. He struggled throughout the game on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, but Wednesday he was happy that he was feeling healthy.

“I feel great today, feel loose, I feel fit, I’m ready to go,” he said ahead of Thursday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs at MSG. “A great sign coming out of the first game. To feel as good as I do now, is definitely a great sign.”

Former UCLA big man Josh Smith is headed to Georgetown.

The news was first reported by Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com.

After sitting out a year per NCAA transfer regulations, Smith will be eligible in December 2013.

At Georgetown, Smith will play with incoming small forward Reggie Cameron of Hudson (N.J.) Catholic, who was an AAU teammate of Smith’s former UCLA teammate Kyle Anderson on the Playaz Basketball Club. Georgetown’s Jabril Trawick also played with the Playaz.

NEW YORK —  The Knicks may be losers of three of their last four and five of their last eight, but at 21-10, they have a healthy five-game lead in the Atlantic Division and are just one game behind the Miami Heat for first place in the Eastern Conference.

One of the surprises during the first half of the NBA season, the Knicks were able to accomplish what they did over the first 30 games without Amar’e Stoudemire, who made his season debut on Tuesday in a 105-100 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. Stoudemire missed the first 30 games of the season after left knee surgery in the preseason.
