    Pablo PrigioniSeemingly in the middle of a free fall with the prospect of an 0-5 west coast trip staring at the Knicks with a matchup at the Utah Jazz this evening, the news only got worse on Monday afternoon at shootaround.

    With Amar’e Stoudemire (right knee debridement) and Rasheed Wallace (fractured left fifth metatarsal) already out for an extended period of time, Carmelo Anthony (injured right knee) told the media he will sit for a third straight game. Additionally, Tyson Chandler (left knee contusion) is officially questionable for a third straight game.

    Already ravaged by injury, Frank Isola of the Daily News reported this afternoon that reserve power forward Kurt Thomas could be done for the season with a stress fracture in his right foot. The oldest active player in the NBA, Thomas was expected to get an x-ray on the foot today and an MRI upon the team’s return to New York on Tuesday.

    Seton Hall sophomore guard Aaron Cosby will transfer, leaving another hole in the Pirates’ backcourt.

    The Pirates will add point guard Sterling Gibbs, who sat out last season due to transfer rules, but have already lost recruit Aquille Carr, when he announced he would play overseas.

    The fate of recruit Jerron Wilbut is also up in the air after he was recently arrested for felony robbery.

    Cosby has been contacted by Boston College, Missouri, Iowa State, Miami, Tennessee, Purdue, Illinois and others, Northfield Mount Hermon coach John Carroll told SNY.tv, adding that Cosby has been released to 40 schools.

    “He plans to make visits shortly and will make a decision soon,” Carroll said.

    “We want to thank Aaron for his two years in a Seton Hall uniform,” Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said.  “We wish him luck in his future endeavors.”

    Is UCLA coach Ben Howland a dead man walking?

    That is the $64,000 question as the Bruins get set to face Minnesota on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

    Some reports out of Los Angeles indicate that Howland’s fate has already been sealed, and that the school has already completed his $2.3 million buyout.

    “There is a feeling that only a Sweet 16 appearance could save his job, and even that might not be enough,” Bill Plaschke wrote last week in the Los Angeles Times.

    “He’s under a lot of pressure after that recruiting class,” former UCLA great Reggie Miller told SNY.tv last week in New York. “He was expected to win, and he has, so let’s see if he can continue to do that.”

    Keith Frazier and Rysheed Jordan, two of the top uncommitted players in the Class of 2013, have set announcement dates for their college plans.

    The 6-foot-5 Frazier out of Dallas (TX) Kimball Union will announce March 28 and is down to Texas A&M, Texas Tech and SMU, his mentor, Erven Davis, told SNY.tv.

    “He’s getting a little restless, so it could be sooner” than March 28, Davis said.

    He added that Frazier “may take a visit” to Texas A&M Friday.

    Tyshawn KansasNEW YORK – Tyshawn Taylor had glanced quickly at the NCAA Tournament bracket on Sunday evening, but hadn’t looked too closely as he and the Nets prepared to host the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday evening. When he was told his alma mater, Kansas, was a No. 1 seed in the South Region with a third-round game against either No. 8 seed North Carolina or No. 9 seed Villanova on tap this weekend, that got his attention.

    Taylor’s Jayhawks defeated the Tar Heels, 80-67, in last season’s Midwest Regional final and it went down as arguably the former St. Anthony High School star’s best collegiate game after he went for a game-high 22 points on 10-for-19 shooting to go along with six rebounds, five assists and five steals.

    A year removed from that effort, which was part of a run to the national championship game, Taylor admits that despite living out his dream of playing in the NBA, there is still nothing like March Madness.

    john-calipariNEW YORK – A year removed from the program’s eighth national championship and six players off that team being chosen in the NBA Draft, the University of Kentucky is heading to the NIT.

    The field of 32 was announced Sunday evening and at 21-11, the Wildcats will travel to Northeast Conference regular season champion Robert Morris for a first-round game. Despite Kentucky being a No. 1 seed and the Colonials a No. 8, the 3,000-seat Sewall Center will host thanks to staffing issues at Rupp Arena.

    “I feel like Rocky in Rocky I who just got his shot against the champion in our home city,” Robert Morris head coach Andy Toole said Sunday evening during the ESPNU telecast of the NIT field.
