  • With the Catholic 7 reportedly set to breakaway and become the new Big East as of today, here’s a quick reminder of how the new leagues will look going forward.

Keep in mind that the ACC will reportedly accept Notre Dame this summer assuming the Irish can negotiate an exit from the Big East. Notre Dame had planned on remaining in the Big East until 2014 assuming the Catholic 7 did the same.

But the Catholic 7 are now going to leave and form their new league — taking the Big East name with them — beginning July 1. They also need to hire a commissioner, set up league offices (potentially in New York) and organize bylaws.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson said Carmelo Anthony will be a gametime decision for tonight’s big showdown with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder at Madison Square Garden.

Anthony sat out Wednesday’s 87-77 victory at the Detroit Pistons with fluid on his knee, and the Knicks are now 4-4 this season without the NBA’s second leading scorer.

Anthony (28.2 ppg) trails only Durant (28.6) among NBA scorers.

“Rest will probably be the best thing for him,” Woodson said, according to the New York Times. “If he wants to sit down and rest a game or two, we’ll do that. It’s still a long season.”

imagesElgin Cook, a 6-6 small forward at Northwest Florida, verbally committed to Oregon on Wednesday, head coach Steve Forbes said.

The son of former NBA star Alvin Robertson, Cook also considered Gonzaga, Illinois, TCU, VCU, South Carolina, New Mexico and Arkansas.

“I liked the fact that me, Damyean [Dotson] and Dominic [Artis] will have a chance to grow together,” Cook told SNY.tv by text. “I think Oregon fits my style. The fans were crazy and I’m just excited about Dana and the coaching staff.”

Julius Randle needed to prove to the McDonald’s All-American folks that he was healthy when he returned from a foot injury that had kept him off the court for several months.

    Mission accomplished.

The 6-foot-9 Randle was officially added to the McDonald’s roster as the 25th player and will compete for the East team. The game is set for April 3 at the United Center in Chicago.

The new was first reported by USA Today and confirmed to SNY.tv by McDonald’s All American committee chairman Morgan Wootten.

“He has been added to the team, no question,” Wootten said.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Lance Tejada has finally validated his decision.

Tejada, a junior point guard who transferred to Pompano Beach (Fla.) Blanche Ely from Miramar (Fla.), led the Tigers to another Florida 7A state by going for 24 points in a 71-52 win over Bartow and 9 points in a 58-50 win over Evans (Orlando). He hit some clutch free throws down the stretch in the 7A championship game against Evans on Saturday night.

He averaged 16.5 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds per game in the tournament.

“The reason why I decided to come to Ely, was that Coach (Melvin) Randall plays an up-tempo style, which I like,” he said. “I knew I’d have a chance to come back here, (to Lakeland), and win a state title as well.”

St. John’s led by as many as seven in the first half and took a four-point lead into halftime, but made just five field goals as part of a 14-point second half effort as Notre Dame shot 68.0 percent (17-of-25) after the break and rolled to a 66-40 victory against the Red Storm.

“You don’t have to look beyond the second half shooting percentages to realize what the difference was in this game,” said St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin. “We were able to keep Notre Dame in check during the first half, but they pounded us in the paint during the second half with high percentage shots.”

JaKarr Sampson finished with a team-high 12 points, while Sir’Dominic Pointer had seven points, 12 boards, four assists and four blocks to lead St. John’s (16-13, 8-9).  Phil Greene IV added 10 points and Chris Obekpahad two points, five rebounds and four blocks. The Red Storm shot 41.4 percent (12-of-29) in the first half, but just 18.5 percent (5-of-27) after the break.  St. John’s went 0-of-9 from distance in the second half and finished just 1-of-13 (7.7 percent) from long range in the game.

NEW YORK (AP) — Big East football schools will get almost all of a $110 million pot in a deal that will allow seven departing basketball schools to keep the name Big East and start playing in their own conference next season, a person familiar with the negotiations says.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the separation agreement has not yet been finalized. That is likely to happen by the end of the week. The football schools will receive approximately $100 million under the agreement, most of which will go to holdover members Connecticut, South Florida and Cincinnati.
