  • PHILADELPHIA — With 37.3 seconds left in Creighton’s 66-50 loss to Duke here late Sunday night, Doug McDermott walked off the court at the Wells Fargo Center to a smattering of applause from the Creighton fans and hugged his father and coach, Greg McDermott.

Was it his last appearance in a Creighton uniform, or will he return for his senior year to help the Bluejays try to win a Big East championship next year when the Missouri Valley Conference team switches leagues?

The 6-foot-8 McDermott is projected as the 37th overall pick by DraftExpress.com, but that could change depending upon on who enters, or does not enter, the draft.

PHILADELPHIALess than 24 hours after releasing a statement saying Ben Howland had not been fired, UCLA released a statement saying Howland had been fired.

The school said it will conduct a “national search for his successor.”

VCU’s Shaka Smart, Butler’s Brad Stevens, Villanova’s Jay Wright and N.C. State’s Mark Gottfried, as well as others, are expected to be targeted.

“I want to thank Ben for all that he has done for UCLA in his ten seasons in Westwood,” UCLA AD Dan Guerrero said. “He embraced our tradition and culture and produced some terrific teams and coached a number of wonderful young men. We wish Ben and his family all the best as they move onto a new chapter in their lives.”

The news was first reported Saturday by Alex Kline of The Recruit Scoop, and confirmed to SNY.tv by a source with direct knowledge.

PHILADELPHIA — Not every team in the Sweet 16 has a supermodel enter its locker room after a historic win.

But the boys at Florida Gulf Coast did.

After their history-making win over San Diego State here propelled them into the Sweet 16, the victorious Eagles reserved a couple of special cheers for their locker room.

“The first was ‘An-dy, An-dy’ as their coach entered, and the second was ‘A-man-da, A-man-da’ as his wife walked through the door in a green tank top.

    And why not?

PHILADELPHIAAs we have covered extensively on this site, some of the best up and coming basketball players in the world are Canadian.

And now they will have the option of choosing a Canadian agent to represent them.

Mike George, who co-founded the highly successful Toronto-based CIA Bounce program that has featured Anthony Bennett, Andrew Wiggins, Tyler Ennis and Xavier Rathan-Mayes and others, is on the brink of becoming a certified NBA agent.

“Right now I’m independent,” George, 35, told SNY.tv by phone Sunday evening. “I’m in the process of deciding which firm.”

Jason Kidd CalNEW YORK – Immediately to the left upon entering the Knicks’ locker room, you will find Jason Kidd‘s locker. The 19-year veteran didn’t do much of note on Saturday evening in the Knicks’ 110-84 win over the Toronto Raptors, but with Saturday marking his 40th birthday, he hung around for the media, figuring they would have some questions regarding the occasion.

As Kidd answered various questions about his age and the fact that rookie forward Chris Copeland led Madison Square Garden in singing ‘Happy Birthday’ before the game began, his attention was on the flat screen television at the front of the room.

NEW YORK – The Knicks did not sign Kenyon Martin to a 10-day contract on Feb. 23 to be their starting power forward, nor did they sign the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft to a second 10-day deal on March 5 to anchor the frontcourt.

Still, by the time the Knicks signed the 13-year veteran for the remainder of the season on March 15, it stands to reason that no one quite saw what was coming, not after Martin had sat idly by without a job until the phone rang with the Knicks offering him a gig as an insurance policy.
