  • Joe Mihalich’s first order of business after officially getting the Hofstra job on Tuesday was to help rebuild the roster through recruiting.

Hofstra had six players arrested last season, including Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and Taran Buie, who are leaving the program.

Mihalich quickly got to work, landing 6-foot-4 Gill St. Bernard’s small forward Chris Jenkins, a former Florida Atlantic commit who had previously visited Hofstra.

The best kept secret in Syracuse basketball became official Wednesday when sophomore guard Michael Carter-Williams announced he would put his name into the 2013 NBA Draft.

“Michael has informed me of his intention to enter the NBA Draft,” said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. “He’s coming off a tremendous season and we appreciate all he’s done for Syracuse basketball. We wish Michael the best of luck as he pursues a pro career.”

Carter-Williams started all 40 games for the Orange this season and finished fifth in assist average (7.3) and fourth in steals average (2.78) among Division I performers. He also averaged 11.9 points per game and a squad-best 35.2 minutes a game.

As previously reported here last week, Philly Vaux Roberts guard Rysheed Jordan announced for St. John’s on Thursday.

    “ST JOHN BABY..????????????????????????????????????????????????,” he Tweeted.

The 6-foot-4 Jordan also considered Temple and UCLA.

“I am looking forward to taking the next steps as a basketball player and in continuing my education at St. John’s University,” he later added. “Throughout the recruiting process it became clear St. John’s is the best fit for me. I developed a strong relationship with Coach [Steve] Lavin, the staff and players and believe I can contribute to the program immediately.

“The full-court, uptempo, attacking system of play is suited for my game. New York City has great energy and The Garden is a place everyone dreams of playing. I want to thank Temple and UCLA for showing interest in me. I am a Philly native and love my city and can’t wait to represent in the Big Apple.”
