  • North Carolina pledge Joel Berry missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer and the USA West team held on to beat USA South, 98-95, to win the Nike Global Challenge at Trinity Washington University Saturday afternoon.

Uncommitted 2014 wing Stanley Johnson had 23 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists for USA West. He and Ohio State pledge D’Angelo Russell, who had 10 points in the loss, were named co-MVPs of the event.

“If Stanley Johnson is the eighth-best player in the country, I need to see the first seven,” a veteran NBA scout who attended the game told SNY.tv. “He’s a special performer. He did it when it counted.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. Devin Booker, one of the top shooting guards in the Class of 2014, has not cut his list to a top five and says he will do so later on.

“I will cut it officially after the summer,” the 6-foot-4 Booker out of Moss Point (Miss.) Tweeted.

Still, it’s a safe bet Booker will land at one of the following schools:  Michigan, Michigan State, Kentucky, Missouri and Florida. Coaches from all five school watched him play for the USA South team here at the Nike Global Challenge.

Michigan is the hometown favorite because Booker’s mother lives there. Head coach John Beilein and assistant LaVall Jordan both watched Booker here.

New Butler coach Brandon Miller has landed his first commit.

Tyler Wideman, a 6-foot-7 power forward from St. John (IN) Lake Central, pulled the trigger for the Bulldogs, becoming the first player to pledge to Miller since he took over for Brad Stevens earlier this month.

The news was previously reported by Scout.com.

Wideman also had offers from Bradley and Central Michigan, according to the Indianapolis Star.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Transferring St. Benedict’s Prep guard Isaiah Briscoe is still weighing his high school options and will soon take another visit.

“We’re going to visit Brewster [Academy],” George Briscoe told SNY.tv at the Nike Global Challenge.

The elder Briscoe said they were also considering Sparta (N.J.) Pope John and Our Savior New American on Long Island.

Briscoe had considered Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep, but they are out.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Kentucky coach John Calipari has offered a scholarship to 2014 Houston Hoops wing Justise Winslow, his AAU coach told SNY.tv.

“Calipari basically offered Justise and said that they really were impressed and saw some things in him that really think he’ll be a good fit for their system,” Houston Hoops coach Tim Schumacher told SNY.tv at the Nike Global Challenge at Trinity Washington University.

“So as of Sunday when I talked to Justise and his mom, he was wide open still and willing to consider Kentucky, yeah”

Kyle WiltjerWASHINGTON, D.C. — In the worst kept secret in college basketball, Kentucky’s Kyle Wiltjer is transferring to Gonzaga, sources confirmed to SNY.tv Friday.

The news was first reported by CBSSports.com

The 6-foot-10 Wiltjer recently visited Gonzaga. The Oregon native also considered Oregon and Oregon State, among others. He will have to sit a year per NCAA transfer regulations unless he obtains a waiver.

Wiltjer is friendly with Gonzaga junior guard Kevin Pangos, who are both are members of the Canadian National Team Development roster.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — St. John’s is loaded with guards for the foreseeable future, so head coach Steve Lavin and his staff are focused on recruiting bigs and wings in the 2014 class.

They currently have three scholarships available but could end up adding as many as five players in this class, depending on what happens with the current roster.

“Bigs, frontline players are the priority and we’re always open to the best available players at any position,” Lavin told SNY.tv while scouting talent at the Nike Global Challenge at Trinity Washington University.
