  • NEW YORK — Stan Wawrinka says his countryman Roger Federer will be back.

Federer and Wawrinka won a gold medal in doubles for Switzerland at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but up until this last week at the U.S. Open, Wawrinka has lived in Federer’s long shadow on the singles court.

For the first time in 35 Majors, Wawrinka went deeper than Federer did. Federer was excused from the tournament by Tommy Robredo in straight sets in the fourth round, thereby preventing the dream quarterfinal against Rafael Nadal that tennis fans everywhere were anticipating.

Looks like Miami picked a good weekend to host several top basketball recruits.

Junior college big man Stephen Hurt and Chicago small forward Paul White were on hand for Miami’s 21-16 victory over No. 12 Florida at Sun Life Stadium.

Committed players Ja’Quan Newton and James Palmer were also there.

“It was really good, the atmosphere [at the football game] was crazy,” the 6-foot-11, 275-pound Hurt out of Northwest Florida State told SNY.tv by phone.

Dominic Magee, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound point guard from Harvey (LA) Helen Cox, committed to Memphis early Sunday morning.

“Yeah, I committed to Memphis at 7:30 this morning,” he told SNY.tv by phone.

“It’s a great school and I have a great relationship with the head coach [Josh Pastner]. I have great relationships with the whole staff. I feel very welcome and very wanted.”

Magee also considered Kentucky, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and LSU. Kentucky had yet to offer.

NEW YORK — This U.S. Open has been deprived of several marquee matchups that seemed enticing when the draw came out.

We never got to see the first-ever New York encounter between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals.

That other quarterfinal showdown between 2009 champ Juan Martin Del Potro and 2011 champ Novak Djokovic? That never materialized, either.

Neither did what would have been a huge semifinal between Djokovic and defending champ Andy Murray in a rematch of the 2012 U.S. Open final and the 2013 Wimbledon final — both won by Murray.

Unlike many recruits nowadays, Abdul Malik Abu and Jared Terrell were able to keep their decisions under wraps right up until the time they announced on Saturday afternoon in Boston.

When they finally made their announcements, the 6-foot-8 Abu of Kimball (N.H.) Union) chose N.C. State and the 6-3 Terrell of Brewster (N.H.) Academy picked Oklahoma State.

Abu also considered Providence, UConn and Florida, while Terrell also mulled Providence, Cincinnati and Rhode Island. SNY.tv reported earlier Saturday that Rhode Island was out for Terrell.

One of the most underrated players in the Class of 2014 is close to making a college choice.

Jordan McLaughlin, a 6-foot, 165-pound point guard out of Etiwanda Rancho Cucamonga (Cal.) High School, narrowed it down to four schools a week ago, Kansas, Indiana, Southern California and UCLA.

On Friday evening, McLaughlin’s AAU coach, Cameron Murray gave a little insight into each of the schools, the process that Jordan is taking at the moment and the timing of the decision.

NEW YORK — Victoria Azarenka is the last woman standing between Serena Williams and her 17th Grand Slam singles title.

The two top seeds will meet in the U.S. Open final Sunday afternoon after each won their semifinals in straight sets on a sun-splashed Friday afternoon inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. It will mark the first time since 2003 that the two top seeds will play for the title.

More broadly, Azarenka, the 24-year-old from Belarus who has beaten Serena twice this year on outdoor hardcourts, may be the only woman who can slow Serena’s assault on the record books.

Not only on Sunday but in the next few years as well.
