Bonzie Colson, a 6-foot-5 1/2 power forward from Barrington (R.I.) St. Andrew’s, verbally committed to Notre Dame over Florida State.
“It was the right fit for me,” Colson told SNY.tv. “I developed great chemistry with the coaching staff.”
“I think it was the combination of academics and athletics,” St. Andrew’s coach Mike Hart told SNY.tv Monday morning. “He felt really really comfortalbe during his visit [two weekends ago].”
Colson averaged 16 points and 9 rebounds last season while shooting 63 percent from the field.
“We will be a basketball player,” Hart said. “As I say, he isn’t your scientific method, cookie-cutter power forward, but then again is he a small forward or is he a shooting guard? All I know is he wins and he gets the job done.”
Colson joins 6-9 forward Martin Geben in Mike Brey’s 2014 haul as the Irish transition to the ACC.
“He’s a great kid,” Hart said of Colson. “He really did the research on his own with a little bit of adult support.”
Speaking of Notre Dame, Brey will be at Iona Prep today to check out 2015 small forward Matt Ryan, who recently visited Notre Dame.
