Chris Walker made his long-awaited debut Tuesday night in a 68-58 win over Missouri and helped to stretch Florida’s home winning streak to 28.
The ultra-athletic Walker had 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 blocks in 7 minutes of action, which included two big alley-oops thrown from former Florida Rams AAU teammate Kasey Hill.
Cameron Oliver is back, and drawing some significant attention from multiple schools out West.
The 6-foot-8, 225 pound senior power forward from Sacramento Grant (Ca.) has missed the better part of the year with a torn ACL, but has returned and is impressing the best in the west with his play. In the 11 games that he has played, Oliver has averaged 21.5 points per game.
Multiple Pac-12 schools have watched Oliver play recently, and he says that more are going to drop by in the not-so-distant future.
“We’re just so young and they’re a ways away. But that’s what I think the most important thing about our team is, those two taking the next step because when they do, I think it will change our team in a very positive way.”
Florida head coach Billy Donovan, who led USA Basketball teams to gold medals in 2012 and 2013, will return to lead the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship, and joining him on the sideline as USA assistant coaches will be Ed Cooley of Providence College and Sean Miller of the University of Arizona.
“Coach Donovan is not only one of the great college basketball coaches but he has proven to be successful with USA Basketball as well,” said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, chair of the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee, which is responsible for selecting the USA men’s U18 coaching staff. “Coach Cooley and coach Miller give us a staff of great teachers and great coaches. The U18 team will be well prepared for international competition.”
