NEWARK — Blair Academy head coach Joe Mantegna sounded very relieved on Wednesday after his team had defeated St. Benedict’s Prep in the New Jersey Prep A State final by a score of 77-65.

“Well, we had lost nine straight state championship games here to St. Benedict’s so obviously it separates this team from a lot of previous teams,” Mantegna told SNY.tv.

Nine straight championship games lost by Blair when facing St. Benedict’s Prep.  For an incredible losing streak that like to end against a perennial powerhouse, Blair needed a Herculean effort all-around and they certainly gave one Wednesday night. They were led by 2014 guard Kevin Seymour, 2015 forward Elijah Burns and 2014 guard/wing Marial Shayok, who is committed to play at Marquette for coach Buzz Williams next year.

    CHICAGO — Here we go.

Wednesday’s two Chicago Public League semifinal games at Chicago State University produced the matchup that not only the city, but the entire country has been waiting for.

Jahlil Okafor and Whitney Young will face Cliff Alexander and Curie in Friday’s city championship game.

It almost never materialized. Both teams narrowly advanced, a testament to the Public League’s depth and talent. The city playoffs have been full of heavyweight battles, perhaps none more dramatic than Wednesday night’s games.

CuseYes, Syracuse blew a double-digit lead to a Boston College team that had been tied for last in the ACC.

Yes, the No. 1 Orange let one slip away.

And yes, Jim Boeheim’s club (25-1) is no longer undefeated.

But there’s not much time to worry about all that.

Jabari Parker and Duke await in Cameron Indoor on Saturday night.

“I’m really happy we’ve won 25 games, I’m happy,” Boeheim told reporters after his team’s 62-59 OT loss to BC, according to WAER Sports. “But we have to concentrate on what’s ahead.”

JaQuan Lyle has a top four and will take two officials in the next week and another in March.

He then plans to make a decision over spring break March 15-23, he confirmed to SNY.tv after previously telling Grant Traylor of the Huntington Herald-Dispatch.

“My four is Oregon, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Memphis,” he told SNY.tv.

“If I’m not sold on one of those schools, I will take another visit to either Providence or Georgetown.

“I go to Oklahoma State this weekend, Kansas on Monday and Memphis March 7.”

UNION, N.J. —In Sunday’s 88-48 win against Hunterdon Central, St. Benedict’s Prep was firing on all cylinders as the team returned back to nearly full strength.

At the forefront of this win stood 2016 forward Arnaldo Toro (pictured at left in photo) and 2017 guard Trevon Duval. The two young players showed why they are considered to be among the most coveted prospects in the state of New Jersey.

The 6-foot-9 Toro led the way for the Gray Bees with 17 points as he finished a number of passes in the lane from VCU-commit Jonathan Williams. He also attacked the offensive glass for a number of offensive rebounds that got him some second-chance points.

KEvin BoyleUNION, N.J. — After beating Kentucky-bound Karl Towns and St. Joe’s-Metuchen on Sunday night at Kean University, coach Kevin Boyle and Montverde Academy will now have 45 days before their next game.

Montverde is the defending ESPN NHSI champion and expects to be in New York for the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School National Tournament April 3-5.

The field won’t be announced until March 10, but Boyle said he and his team will be there for the three-day event, which culminates with a championship game on April 5 at Madison Square Garden. The first two days of the event will be played at Christ the King in Queens.

“We’re done now,” Boyle said after the St. Joe’s win. “We don’t play for 45 more days so we will be back in April. At the position we’re in, we’ll 100 percent be invited.”
