Alonzo Mourning III, also known as Trey, will follow his father’s footsteps and play at Georgetown.
The 6-foot-9 power forward from Ransom (FL) Everglades committed to the Hoyas on Saturday, according to the Washington Post. He averaged 29 points and 10 rebounds per game last season while leading Ransom to Florida’s Class 4A regional semifinals.
Mourning III also considered Duke and Florida.
“There is a lot of pressure that goes with carrying that name here, but Trey has handled it with incredible dignity and grace,” Claude Grubair, the basketball coach and athletic director at Ransom Everglades, told the Post. “That is how he does everything.”
He added: “He has emerged as one of the best shooters of his size anywhere in the country. That’s not what you see in AAU basketball, where kids really showcase their athleticism. What he showcases is incredible shooting skill and a high IQ, so he will be a very good fit for Georgetown.”
GOVAN ENJOYS GEORGETOWN VISIT
Jessie Govan, a 6-10 center from Wings Academy in New York, visited Georgetown over the weekend and enjoyed it.
“The visit went very well,” he told SNY.tv. “Coach [John] Thompson and [coach Tavaras] Hardy did a great job this weekend. I got to see the campus, play with the team, see the campus life. We went to the Verizon center, got to see the arena. I had a great talk with John Thompson II, as well, and that was very cool. All in all, it was a great visit.”
Govan recently had home visits with Georgetown, UConn, Seton Hall and Stanford but has not other visits planned at the moment.
“As of right now, I have no other visits planned,” he said. “Just trying to stay focused on this EYBL season and lead my team so we can qualify for Peach Jam.”
