Quinnipiac junior guard Giovanni McLean was the latest former Westchester Community College player taken down by the transcript scandal that swept through that school.
The NCAA gave McLean a waiver allowing him to continue his studies through the fall semester but he cannot play or practice with the team, the Journal News reported.
“The NCAA has issued a temporary waiver allowing Giovanni McLean to continue his studies,” school spokeswoman Lynn Bushnell told the Journal News, which first broke the story of the transcript scandal. “He is, however, prohibited from playing and practicing with the basketball team until the NCAA issues a final decision.”
The 6-foot-1 floor general is the fourth former WCC player impacted by the scandal. St. John’s last week ruled forward Keith Thomas ineligible for the season.
Prior to that, Damien Davis and Jamall Walker of Florida A&M had their athletic scholarships pulled.
McLean, a Bronx Regional graduate, became a hot commodity this winter after averaging 16.8 points, 7.4 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game for the 28-5 Vikings, who advanced to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. They fell to Wallace State Community College in the first round.
In the Region XV title game, which sent WCC to the National Tournament, McLean had 13 points and 12 assists against zero turnovers in a 77-73 win over Harcum College.
