SYRACUSE — Rhode Island coach Danny Hurley this week will sign a six-year extension that takes him through the 2020-21 season at the school and is no longer a candidate at St. John’s or any other school, a source told SNY.tv on Sunday.
Hurley had been considered a leading candidate to replace Steve Lavin at St. John’s, but later Sunday it came out that legendary former St. John’s player Chris Mullin is expected to take the job.
With DePaul reportedly hiring Dave Leitao according to ESPN’s Andy Katz, St. John’s could now also target Buffalo coach Bobby Hurley, who was also in preliminary talks with Arizona State. The elder Hurley brother interviewed at DePaul on Saturday.
Sources said St. JOhn’s will reach out to Mullin and Jackson to gauge their interest, with Mullin having strong support by some factions.
Hurley has gone 45-49 in three seasons at Rhode Island, including a 23-10 mark this year. Next year’s team could be the preseason No. 1 team in the A-10 with the return of Jared Terrell, E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin, along with the potential addition of Memphis transfer Kuran Iverson via waiver.
