After visiting Kentucky over the weekend, junior college shooting guard Mychal Mulder committed to the Wildcats on Tuesday at a press conference.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound sophomore from Vincennes College averaged 15.7 points and 6.4 rebounds while making 46.3 percent of his 3-pointers (88 of 190) last season. He’s rated a four-star prospect and the No. 13 JUCO player in the country by 247Sports’ composite ranking.
A native of Ontario, Canada, Mulder also considered Creighton, Indiana and Wichita State, but Kentucky won out, gaining its first Class of 2015 pledge since November. He will have two years of eligibility at Kentucky.
“[Calipari] told me there is an opportunity there for me and it’s my choice to grab it. That’s all I ever wanted,” Mulder said, according to Kyle Tucker of the Louisville Courier-Journal. “It was a tough decision for me. A lot of great people recruited me. I just thought at the end of the day, Kentucky, playing there was probably my best chance of continuing my career after college. I hope to play professionally one day, and I felt like that would probably be my best opportunity.”
After losing Aaron Harrison and Booker to the NBA Draft, Kentucky needs shooters. “He can really shoot it, he’s an athletic kid who really understand how to play, a good catch-and-shoot guy, has a nice dribble pull-up, a good transition player,” Vincennes assistant coach Brian Davis previously told Tucker. “He needs to continue to get stronger, probably needs to add a good 10 pounds on his frame for that level, and continue to tighten up his ball handling. “But he could play either wing spot. He rebounds. He could play either that third guard or small forward if needed.” Mulder joins point guard Isaiah Briscoe, wing Charles Matthews and big man Skal Labissiere in Kentucky’s 2015 recruiting class. The Wildcats this month have missed out on Cheick Diallo (Kansas), Brandon Ingram (Duke), Malik Newman (Mississippi State), Stephen Zimmerman (UNLV), Caleb Swanigan (Michigan State) and Thomas Bryant (Indiana).
