T.J. Gibbs enjoyed his weekend visit to Notre Dame so much he decided to attend school there.
“I committed [Sunday morning],” he told SNY.tv. “I really just fell in love with the campus and I really felt comfortable with the team and the coaches. It really felt like home, I thought that was a great place for me to be.”
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Gibbs said he also considered Oklahoma, Providence, Georgetown and Boston College.
Gibbs, the No. 7 point guard in the Class of 2016 according to 247Sports.com, is the brother of former Pittsburgh standout Ashton Gibbs and transferring Seton Hall guard Sterling Gibbs and possesses the same smooth jumper that has made his brothers stars at the college level.
Asked if he would try to persuade his older brother Sterling to follow him to Notre Dame, even though they wouldn’t play together, T.J. said, “We’ll see. I haven’t really talked to him too much about what he’s doing.”
Last summer T.J. played on the New Jersey Playaz team that won the Peach Jam and also featured Kentucky-bound point guard Isaiah Briscoe and Syracuse-bound big man Moustapha Diagne.
Now he’s the latest New York-New Jersey player to commit to coach Mike Brey and his staff, following 2015 Iona Prep shooting guard Matt Ryan.
“They said I would come in and play point guard,” Gibbs said. “They said nothing is given, everything is earned and I’m really excited to get started and go down there.”
Seton Hall Prep coach Kevin Williams said the Irish are getting a gem.
“T.J. is a true leader who will thrive under Coach Brey at Notre Dame,” he said. “He is a guard who can attack the basket and also shoot the 3 when teams lay off of him. At the same time he is extremely unselfish, getting his teammates involved offensively as well. He has quick hands and is underrated on the defensive end.
