Iowa State assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger is the favorite to replace Fred Hoiberg as the head coach at Iowa State, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.
Otzelberger, who replaced Matt Abdelmassih at Iowa State after the latter joined Chris Mullin’s staff at St. John’s, has the support of AD Jamie Pollard but others at the school would need to sign off on his hiring, Rothstein reported.
If hired, Otzelberger would look to replicate what Butler’s Chris Holtmann did when he was elevated to head coach when Brandon Miller was sidelined with medical issues. Holtmann led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament and was in the mix for Big East Coach of the Year honors before Villanova’s Jay Wright won that honor.
Holberg left Iowa State to take over the Chicago Bulls.
