Metropolitan area natives Tyus Battle, Isaiah Briscoe and Eric Paschall were among 24 players named Tuesday afternoon to USA Basketball’s 24-member U19 World Championship Team training camp roster.
Training camp will run in Colorado Springs from June 13-20. The 24 participants will be pared down to 12 before the team leaves for Athens on June 21. The FIBA U19 World Championships will be held June 27-July 5 in Crete, Greece.
“It should be looked upon as a tremendous honor to be selected to tryout for this team, because the competition is so strong,” Syracuse head coach and USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee Chair Jim Boeheim said in a statement. “Our committee does a great job identifying players who will represent our country in international competition. We know that even in the training camp, the competition will be fierce.”
Briscoe, Jalen Brunson and Alonzo Trier were on the U18 National Team last summer, winning the FIBA Americas U18 Championship last summer to qualify for the United States for Greece. In 2013, a combined 10 of the 24 players played for either the U17 World Championship team or the FIBA Americas U16 team. Both squads won gold.
The U19 coaching staff will have a different look this summer after Billy Donovan left the University of Florida for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Arizona head coach Sean Miller has been promoted to head coach, Providence head coach Ed Cooley remains as an assistant and Dayton head coach Sean Miller has been added as the second assistant.
Donovan steered the U19 World Championship team in 2013 and U18 teams to FIBA Americas gold in 2012 and 2014. He is likely to be heavily considered as Mike Krzyzewski’s successor if and when the Duke head coach steps down as National Team head coach following the 2016 Rio Olympics.
