Bill Self is calling Saturday’s matchup between No. 20 Kentucky and No. 4 Kansas game “a great resume game,” but he isn’t exactly fired up about the timing of it.
The showdown between two of the most storied programs in college basketball takes place in the Big 12/SEC Challenge — and right smack in the middle of their respective conference schedules.
“I do think it’s a big game, but I don’t know if John [Calipari] would feel the same as I do,” Self said Friday on SportsCenter. “But this isn’t the greatest time to play these games. You’re in the middle of your conference grind and certainly you’re stepping out. And it appears to be a bigger game to the fan base or maybe even the players than what it actually is in the real importance.
“But this is obviously a great resume game. It’s the two winningest programs of all time. There’s unbelievable history and tradition by both places. Both programs have been extremely successful of late, and of course they’ve been on an unbelievable run since Cal’s been there the last six or seven years.
“So it will be a fun environment, but you go to plays like Kansas and Kentucky and Duke and Carolina, you go to places like that because there is pressure. You want to play in games that matter. You want to play where there’s so much interest, and certainly both these places this weekend have that.”
