Donyell Marshall will join Steve Pikiell’s staff at Rutgers, sources told SNY.tv.

The two both played at UConn for Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun, who has been a mentor for Pikiell in this process. Pikiell was a grad assistant during Marshall’s freshman year.

Marshall, 42, spent this past season on coach Nate Oats’ staff at Buffalo, which made the NCAA Tournament and lost to Miami in the first round.

“We’re going to hire a great staff and we’re going to take our time with that and do it right,” Pikiell said Tuesday at his introductory press conference.

Prior to Buffalo, Marshall spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Rider. He also served as an assistant coach at George Washington and with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Developmental League.

Marshall was selected fourth overall in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and was traded in 1995 to the Golden State Warriors, where he played until 2000. Marshall also spent time with the Utah Jazz, the Chicago Bulls, the Toronto Raptors, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Seattle SuperSonics and finally the Philadelphia 76ers. In 2005, Marshall tied the NBA record for three pointers in a game with 12, an honor he holds with Kobe Bryant.

Marshall played his college basketball at UConn from 1991-1994 and his number was honored by UConn at Gampel Pavilion in 2007.
