CERRITOS, Ca. – Trevon Duval took home the Most Valuable Player award at the 14th annual Pangos All-American Camp.
“It was great,” said Duval, the 6-foot-3 Class of 2017 point guard out of Dallas (TX) Advanced Prep International. “It was kind of unexpected. I didn’t even know they were giving out MVP’s. It was good to get it. It means a lot to get it playing against so many talented players.”
Stanley Johnson, the 2013 Pangos MVP, provided Duval with the award.
“I never played with him,” said Duval. “I’ve seen him at Adidas Nations, but it was cool seeing someone who was in my shoes a few years ago that made it.”
Duval recently told SNY.tv that five schools were working the hardest for his services: Maryland, Arizona, Kansas, Baylor, and North Carolina.
“I’m not sure about any visits yet,” Duval said at the Under Armour Association stop near L.A.. “I’m not really focused on recruiting right now. I’m just taking it slowly.”
Duval established himself as the top player in the Pangos camp with a balanced offensive repertoire. When hitting his outside shot, Duval is tough to contain and he used his increased strength to attack the basket off the dribble.
“It’s just me getting bigger, natural progression,” said Duval. “I try to do push-ups as much as I can, but it’s just natural. I definitely feel it when I’m playing.”
Duval has been in the Southern California area the past two weeks with both the Under Armour Association event last week and now the Pangos All-Star camp. Going into June, Duval has his mind on one thing.
“Trying to get some rest,” Duval said. “That’s my main focus. Try to get healthy fully because I have a lot of bumps and bruises.”
TOP 30 ALL-STAR GAME
DeAndre Ayton and Billy Preston took home the MVP’s of the camp’s Top 30 all-star game, scoring 20 and 19 points, respectively. The 7-foot Ayton got off to a hot start in the first half with a three from the top of the key followed by two dunks.
“It was fun, to be honest,” said Ayton. “Unfortunately we lost, but it was fun to play with the guys and I don’t know a lot of guys in my class so it was fun to build a relationship.”
Ayton told SNY.tv he wants to visit Kansas, Kentucky and Arizona.
The 6-9 Preston used his diverse skill-set to score from all areas of the court as well. Preston, who earlier this week announced he will spend his senior year at Oak Hill Academy (Va.) told Rivals he is listing USC, Arizona, Kansas and Maryland as his top schools.
CLASS OF 2019
The majority of players from the Top 30 all-star game were rising seniors, but two players in the 2019 class made their mark. Cole Anthony, the 6-2 point guard from Archbishop Molloy (NY) and the son of former NBA point guard Greg Anthony, and 6-10 forward Charles Bassey from St. Anthony (TX) certainly proved their worth over the weekend. Anthony showcased his explosive leaping ability throwing down highlight reel dunks that pulled spectators out of their seats numerous times. Bassey used his length and agility to alter shots on the defensive end while also finishing in the paint with powerful two-hand dunks.
OTHER NOTES
**6-4 guard Jay Jay Chandler (TX) and 6-3 junior guard David Singleton (CA) briefly entertained the camp with a back and forth battle that included several drives and deep jump shots on consecutive possessions.
**6-9 center Brandon Huffman, from Word of God (NC) displayed an improving skill-set. The big man ran the floor and used his size to challenge shots on the defensive end and clean up missed shots on the offensive end. He recently added offers from Rutgers, New Mexico, Tennessee and Baylor.
**Trae Young, one of the elite scorers in the Nike EYBL had his outside shot falling early and often in the all-star game. The 6-2 guard dazzled from the outside while 6-5 guard Hamidou Diallo’s explosive leaping ability resulted in a handful of two-handed rim rattlers.
Young is considering Kentucky, MIssouri, Virginia and Oklahoma, among others.
