PHILADELPHIA — Before a few college basketball coaching A-Listers Sunday morning, 2017 ESPN top rated point guard Trevon Duval led all scorers with 19 as his We-R1 team fought past Philly Pride 58-57 in the Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown.
Coach Jay Wright of national champion Villanova had his eyes fixated on the guard out of Delaware. Also in the crowd was Indiana coach Tom Crean, Temple’s Fran Dunphy, North Carolina State’s Mark Gottfried, and UCLA assistant David Grace.
With all eyes on him, Duval did what he always tries to do, play his game. “When I’m playing I try and treat it like a normal game, no matter how big the crowd is or who’s watching,” Duval said. “I just try to play my game.”
Fresh out of appearances in the Steph Curry SC30 Select Camp and the Under Armour All-America camp Duval said the experience was fun.
On the recruiting front, Duval is looking to cut down the choices for college towards the end of the summer to bring his focus in on the next level of his basketball career.
“I might try to cut my list down in August, around the Elite 24,” Duval said” That time. After or during. There’s probably going to be about 10 schools that I decide to release.”
Of the teams currently after the promising point guard’s services, Maryland and Villanova are trying their best to stay at the forefront of Duval’s mind.
“They contact me almost every day, they try to keep in contact with me.” Duval said of the Big East and Big Ten schools.
Along with Villanova and Maryland, Duval mentioned that Indiana and USC are in constant contact with him as well.
Recently, Memphis reached out to the guard as well.
“Memphis just reached out to me recently,” Duval said. “I think I already had an offer from them, but they just now started reaching out to me and get more in contact with me.”
Duval is in a peculiar position this summer with decisions, though. Not only does the We-R1 guard have to choose colleges to attend, but he also needs to pick a high school for his senior year season.
Last season Duval played for Advanced Preparatory International in Dallas. But with recent API player Terrance Ferguson opting to forgo college basketball and play overseas amid eligibility concerns, Duval is looking at other options.
“I’m still deciding on what high school I’m going to go to next year,” Duval said. “I’m really trying to get that done as soon as possible. Me and my dad have been looking at schools that I could go in an do well for my senior year.”
As of right now, there are no clear-cut favorites for Duval’s high school destination. The guard is just looking to land at a school who will help propel him on to his next school.
“There’s so many places,” Duval said of his options for his senior year. “There’s not really a region or a state that I want to stay in specifically. Wherever I can get better at to get ready for college is where I’m going to go.”
