ARDSLEY, N.Y. — Playing alongside Mohamed Bamba, Quade Green, Brandon Randolph and Cole Anthony, it may be easy to overlook Walter Whyte on the PSA Cardinals.

But if not for the 6-foot-5 Whyte, the New York team probably doesn’t make the finals of the Peach Jam last week.

The small forward from the St. Luke’s School (CT) hit two foul shots to put the Cardinals up for good by one point with 15.6 seconds left to cap a comeback from 20 points down.

“Really, Walt should be up here [with the media] because he did all that,” Green told reporters.

But Whyte’s talents are not lost on the college coaches who have been monitoring him the last two weeks. St. Joe’s coach Phil Martelli was the latest to offer Whyte a scholarship after watching him on Sunday at the Elevate Hoops event.

“They’ve been watching me for a while,” Whyte said of St. Joe’s. “They’ve been watching me since last spring and Coach Martelli’s been coming out a lot more.”

A strong student, Whyte also holds offers from places like Yale, Penn, Davidson, Northeastern and Monmouth.

“I don’t have any definite list,” he said.  “After the AAU season, I’ll cut my list, probably to 10.”

In the meantime, he has developed his jump shot to the point where coaches like Martelli believe Whyte can play in the A-10 or above.

“I can pass pretty well and I’ve been working on my jump shot,” he said. “It’s improved a lot, and I can get to the rim pretty well.”

With Bamba and Green off with the USA U18 team in Chile and Randolph sitting out to rest for Las Vegas, Whyte was able to showcase his game more this past weekend.

“It’s now my time to show coaches what I can do,” he said. “I can score the ball a lot more and I can really play.”
