  • Trae Young Going on Nike Bahamas Trip, Targeting December Decision

Trae Young’s big summer is getting even bigger.

After capturing the Peach Jam title with his MoKan Elite team in July and winning a gold medal with the USA U18 team at the FIBA Americas Championship, Young is headed on the Nike Bahamas trip this week — but only after visiting the White House on Tuesday.

β€œIt’s gonna be really cool,” Young told NewsOk.com. “They’re flying the team to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to visit the White House, so that’s something that’s gonna be cool. Just 12 guys get to go, and we’ll go to the Bahamas and play against the Bahamian National team.”

The Nike trip is scheduled to compete directly with Saturday’s Under Armour Elite 24 Game in Brooklyn — and will draw several top Nike players away. SNY.tv confirmed that Quade Green, Jarred Vanderbilt, Lonnie Walker, Wendell Carter Jr., Troy Brown and P.J. Washington are also making the trip to the Bahamas to play the Bahamian National Team.

The official roster will be released Wednesday.

Meantime, Young is down to six schools in his recruitment: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas Tech and Washington.

No visits have been set and Young said he hopes to decide by mid-winter.

“My family and I will sit down soon and come up with when we’ll start taking official visits,” he said. “I only get five official visits, so one school won’t get an official visit. So I’ll just be setting those up, so I can get out there and learn as much as I can about those guys. I want to take some during football season. I don’t know if I want to wait too long. I’d like to make a decision around December. That’s what I’m looking at, but anything can happen.”

Young and his MoKan Elite teammate Michael Porter Jr. have long talked of a potential package. For that to happen, Young would need to now join Porter Jr. at Washington.

“He’s my good friend and we play really well together,” Young said. “We ended up winning the biggest tournament in high school basketball this summer. That was a big goal for us. We feel like we can do that at the college level. He feels that Washington is his spot and what’s best for him. I don’t know if Washington is the best spot for me. It could be, it could not be. I’m gonna do what’s best for me. But it’s still a possibility.”
