Bruno Fernando, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound center who one Division I coach compared to Oklahoma City Thunder forward Serge Ibaka, committed to Maryland on Sunday.
A native of Angola, Fernando initially committed to SMU in April 2016 before opening up his recruitment and doing a post-grad year at Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy.
Fernando is Maryland’s first 2017 commit and should help offset the losses of Damonte Dodd and L.G. Gill. “He is very athletic with a very active motor,” IMG Academy coach John Mahoney said. “He’s a rim protector on defense and can play with this back to the basket but also out on the perimeter on offense. “For us he will play more on the wing.
