Samson George, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward from Pittsburgh (PA) First Love Christian and the NY Rens AAU program, committed to Iona on Saturday following an official visit to the school.
George, who also considered Central Connecticut, Oregon State and Monmouth, will enroll at the mid-semester break in December.
“I love their style of play and also think this is the program that will get me better as a player,” George said.
“It was the right fit,” First Love Christian coach Khayree Wilson said. “He likes the way they play up and down. It’s also close to home, he loves the New York/New Jersey area.
“He’s going to bring toughness, grit and rebounding. He is a great young man to coach and he’s very humble.”
“Samson is a winner so going to a program like Iona that is always winning over 20 games and is always in the [NCAA] Tournament makes this a great fit for him,” NY Rens coach Andy Borman said.
“He is a double-double machine and a high-end athlete. He attacks the ball at its highest point on rebounds. He can face the basket and hit the mid-range jump shot consistently. He will be a definite impact player the minute he steps on campus.”
George joins point guard C.J. Seaforth of Hamden (CT) high and USAD in Iona’s 2017 class. Seaforth committed in August.
