Patrick Ewing could be returning to Georgetown, this time as their head coach.

The news was first reported by Casual Hoya and confirmed by Adrian Wojnarowski.

Georgetown’s head coaching vacancy comes after the Hoyas let go of John Thompson III following the 2016-17 season that saw his team finish 14-18.

Ewing played four seasons at Georgetown under Thompson III’s father, legendary Big John Thompson II, from 1981-85. Following his college career, Ewing was drafted No. 1 overall in the 1985 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks.

Currently, Ewing is the associate head coach for the Charlotte Hornets, holding the position since 2013. Wojnarowski reported further that Ewing has gone as far as identifying potential candidates to fill out his staff, should he accept the position to coach his alma mater.

Several coaches, including Notre Dame’s Mike Brey and Xavier’s Chris Mack, were previously approached for the job and turned it down, sources said.
