Samuell Williamson, the 6-foot-6 small forward from Rockwall (TX) High School, announced his commitment to Louisville on Monday via Twitter. He took an official visit to Louisville this past weekend (Sept. 14).
“First off I had a great visit up there this past weekend,” Williamson told ZAGSBLOG on Monday via text. “I’ve built a better relationship with coach [Chris] Mack than any other head coach recruiting me. I feel that coach Mack truly believes in me and he told me he won’t let me fail when it comes to reaching my dreams. That meant a lot.”
According to 247Sports, Williamson is ranked as the No. 44 overall player in the Class of 2019 and the No. 6 player from the state of Texas. He joins Jaelyn Withers and Josh Nickleberry as the third commit in the Cardinals’ 2019 class.
“Louisville’s fan base was also a deciding factor as I’ve always wanted to play at a basketball school with rich tradition,” he said. “Also the opportunity to come in and make an impact early was important to me. I also wanted to pick a school where I can compete for a national championship and I feel I can do that at Louisville.”
Louisville is looking to land a class of four or five commits for 2019. They are currently involved for Aidan Igiehon, Cole Anthony, Jahmius Ramsey, and Omar Payne, among others.
“They want me to play a significant role as a freshman, and they see me as an All-ACC rookie team/freshman of the year player,” said Williamson. “They also talked about how many different ways they could use my versatility and do a lot of different things on the court.”
Williamson chose Louisville over Kansas, Baylor, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech. In addition to his Louisville visit, Williamson also took officials to Kansas (Aug. 31) and Texas A&M (Sept. 7).
He also had visits planned to Texas Tech and Oklahoma, but they have been canceled.
