St. John’s this weekend hosted Monmouth grad transfer Nick Rutherford on an official visit and junior college big man Devale Johnson on an unofficial.
The 6-foot-3 Rutherford averaged 5.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists last season for the Hawks. He would provide leadership at the point guard position for a St. John’s team that lost Shamorie Ponds to the NBA Draft and brings in high school prospect John McGriff.
The 6-8 Johnson averaged 13.4 points and 8.9 rebounds at Williston State College.
“I can space the floor and protect the rim and rebound at a high skill as well,” he said by text.
Johnson said he enjoyed his St. John’s visit.
“The visit went good and their message was to keep finishing up these summer courses which [are] due in a month,” he said.
Johnson is also talking to Albany and Fairleigh Dickinson and plans to visit Wagner, Nichols State and St Joe’s, he said. He hopes to play in the 2019-20 season.
“I will go to school in the fall,” he said.
