Niels Lane commits to Florida

Niels Lane, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound shooting guard from Roselle (N.J.) Catholic and Team Final, announced his commitment to Florida on Tuesday.

The No. 14 shooting guard in 2020 per 247Sports.com, Lane also considered Miami and Texas. He previously cut Providence and UConn from consideration.

“Niels is the ultimate slasher,” Team Final director Aaron Burt said. “He has a college body already. His jump shot has gotten better. He finishes through contact and can play multiple positions. He is what people like to call a 2-way player. He will be any team’s best defender and possibly their most versatile player.”

Florida head coach Mike White and three assistants recently met with Lane at Roselle Catholic, and have made him a priority.

“[Florida] reiterated…that he’s a priority,” Rod Lane, Niels’ father, said recently. “They love his versatility and feel he will be a great fit.”

Lane is Florida’s second 2020 commit, following shooting guard Samson Ruzhentsev.

Lane transferred into Roselle Catholic this season and hopes to help them challenge for the school’s fourth New Jersey Tournament of Champions title.

“Niels is the type of player that will impact the game on both ends of the court immediately in any program,” RC coach Dave Boff said. “He’s an elite defender who can also score at all three levels.”

Lane plans to be a “high-energy guy on both ends of the floor.”

“I take a lot of pride in my defense, I consider myself a lock-down defender,” he said this summer. “I can also score the ball. I’m a good shooter. I still have room to improve on my jump shot, but I feel like my jump shot’s pretty good. And I think I can lead a team. I think I have pretty good leadership skills.”
