As a crafty left handed point guard with confrontational defense and an adeptness for finishing above the rim, Korey Richardson recently graduated from Southern California Academy and will spend a prep year at Central Pointe Christian Post Graduate Academy in Orlando, Fla.
The 6-foot-5 Richardson, who recently wrapped up an unofficial visit to Murray State, holds offers from Clemson, Iona, Tulane, North Carolina A&T, and South Carolina State.
The Columbia, S.C. native has transformed his game as a dish-first point guard who prioritizes defensive energy and making vital stops. He opened eyes playing AAU for both Big Shots and Game Elite this summer, turning in a memorable 22-point performance against the Atlanta Celtics.
“I chose the post grad route to get better as I approach the next level,” said Richardson. “I felt like Central Pointe was the program which best suits me as a player.”
Richardson will visit North Carolina A&T on October 30th, which is homecoming weekend at the school. He said he enjoyed the recent visit to Murray State, which offered him a scholarship during the first week of the live period.
“I really liked it at Murray State,” Richardson said. “The coaching staff really made me feel at home. I spoke with coach (Tim) Kaine, he basically showed me the whole routine. I know Trae Hannibal for a while now, we basically grew up playing against each other. Having followed Ja (Morant) closely, being that he is from nearby me, everyone saw what he was able to do out there at Murray State. He blew up there. It’s definitely a good place to be.”
Clemson’s campus is only 45 minutes from Richardson’s home in Columbia. He took an unofficial visit back on July 2nd.
“With me being a bigger point guard and a facilitator, that style fits their system,” said Richardson. “They get out and run. In the half court set, they run a motion and a pick and roll. They told me they like my reads off the screen, skip court passes and my athleticism.”
Richardson rattled off Georgia, Coastal Carolina, South Carolina, Winthrop, Arkansas Pine Bluff, FAMU, Jacksonville State, and several others as programs he has heard from recently.
Ultimately, Richardson cited style of play and how well he fits the system as major factors in his final decision.
“Everything else will take care of itself,” he said.
