St. John’s announced the addition of guards AJ Storr and Kolby King on Wednesday.
Storr, a four-star recruit and the no. 95 prospect in the nation according to ESPN, will come to Queens following a season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The highest-rated high school prospect of the Mike Anderson Era, the 6-foot-6 guard chose St. John’s over reported offers from Kansas, Illinois, LSU and Oklahoma among others.
“AJ is an unquestioned talent and I think he has the ability to really shape the direction of our program moving forward,” said head coach Mike Anderson. “He has a tremendous work ethic to go along with an ability to score at a high level. AJ is a high character young man who comes from a great family. We are excited for him to join the St. John’s basketball family.”
Playing with Vegas Elite in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League this summer, Storr averaged 12.1 points per game.
A native of Rockford, Ill., Storr played last season with AZ Compass Prep, one of the nation’s most elite high school teams. With Storr averaging 11 points and four rebounds per game, AZ Compass Prep advanced to the semifinals of GEICO High School Nationals.
King, a 6-foot-2 guard from Pembroke Pines, Fla., fits the mold of a Mike Anderson guard. An outstanding defender and superior athlete, King led Pembroke Pines Charter to its first Class 5A state championship this past March, scoring a team-high 27 points in the championship game. In a sign of things to come with his future collegiate squad, King and the Jaguars registered 13 steals and turned 19 turnovers into 27 points in that title contest. King also poured in a team-high 14 points during an overtime win over Tampa Jesuit in the Class 5A semifinals.
“Kolby is an exciting player who is a great fit for St. John’s Basketball,” said Anderson. “He is a crafty guard who can create for both himself and his teammates. Kolby is also a fine young man who comes from a great family. As he continues to develop his game, Kolby can become a really good player at this next level.”
King has already begun to show those flashes of offensive brilliance, leading the Under Armour AAU Circuit with 19.6 points per game this past summer for Team Breakdown.
After recording its largest margin of victory in 70 years in the team’s season opener on Tuesday night against Mississippi Valley State, the Red Storm will return to action at Carnesecca Arena on Saturday afternoon against Saint Peter’s. Tip-off for that contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. on FS1.
