N.C. State: “The visit was pretty good. Basically the same thing as Pitt. Come on and play as a freshman and basically be myself.” He also took an unofficial to Seton Hall over the summer and Pirates coach Shaheen Holloway and his staff were on hand Friday night at the Hustle & Heart event in which Johnson and the Tri-State All-Stars beat Overtime Elite’s Cold Hearts 97-85. “Basically like be the kind in the tri-state and they’re going to let me go,” he said of Seton Hall’s message. He said he has no specific timeline on a decision, but previously mentioned he might commit on his birthday Feb. 11. This post was updated Oct. 19. ROSELLE, N.J. — Ty-Laur Johnson, the 6-foot Class of 2023 point guard from the NY Rens and Our Savior Lutheran High School, is getting closer to a college decision.
The Brooklyn native has visited Fordham, Pittsburgh and N.C. State and will visit Memphis this coming weekend (Oct. 21). Andy Borman, the former executive director of the NY Rens AAU program for which Johnson played, is now an assistant at Memphis.
Johnson also is considering a visit to Mississippi State. He is ranked the No. 14 point guard in 2023 by 247Sports.com.
He broke down his previous visits:
Fordham: “Fordham was real good. Basically, they was saying I could be the king of New York if I came there.”
Pitt: “Pitt’s message was they want me to play as a freshman and be tough and be myself. The campus was beautiful.”
