Class of 2023 five-star forward and former Duke commit Mackenzie Mgbako will play basketball for Mike Woodson at Indiana next season. Mgbako announced his commitment to the Hoosiers via Instagram.
Mgbako, the 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward from Roselle Catholic (NJ), choose Indiana over his other finalist Kansas. He is the highest rated player Indiana has recruited out of high school since Romeo Langford, the No. 7 overall player in the 2018 class. Mgbako is ranked the No. 8 overall player in the 2023 class per 247Sports.
“I chose IU because I felt that Coach Woodson can put me in a position to expand and develop my game,” Mgbako said to On3. “The environment at Indiana is unmatched. It’s a place where I felt support from the coaching staff and fans. With Indiana and it’s roster, there’s a great possibility to achieve big things and create a winning culture.”
In his senior season at Roselle Catholic, Mgbako averaged 16.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He also knocked down 31 3-pointers in 16 contests.
The New Jersey native brings elite athleticism and the ability to stretch the floor to the Hoosiers. Mgbako is projected to be a top-20 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
Indiana has two other recruits in the 2023 class, including four-star point guard Gabe Cupps and four-star combo guard Jakai Newton.
