Class of 2024 top-10 player Asa Newell has committed to Georgia, he announced Wednesday.
The 6-foot-9 Montverde (FL.) product and Georgia native ultimately chooses to stay in-state over Alabama, Texas and Gonzaga, among several others.
Newell is the Bulldogs’ highest-ranked recruit since Anthony Edwards, the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
“I feel like I have the deepest relationship with them,” Newell told ZAGSBLOG in September. “All the way from Erik Pastrana coaching at Oklahoma State to now Georgia, he was my first offer so I know him on a personal level.”
Newell is Georgia’s first commit in the class of 2024, though the Bulldogs are heavily involved with top-30 players Derrion Reid and Khani Rooths.
“Asa is very intriguing because he’s fairly new to competitive basketball in the last two years,” Montverde Academy coach Kevin Boyle told ZAGSBLOG.
“And he’s gotten so much better. Just the ability to rim-run and get to the rim and be athletic enough to be able to guard different people on defense, I think he’s going to end up being a very good NBA player because those things alone are going to make you a productive player in the NBA at his size.”
“And then if you end up getting better and better offensively, then you’re going to a higher level or an All-Star level player, we’ll see. But he should be playing in the NBA for a long time.”
