DePaul is parting ways with head coach Tony Stubblefield, the University announced on Monday morning. Stubblefield was 28-54 as the Blue Demons head coach overall and 9-38 in Big East play. DePaul currently sits at 3-15 this season, good for last in the Big East.
“After evaluating the current state of our men’s basketball program, a decision was made to make a change in the head coaching position,” said DePaul Vice President and Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy. “We want to thank Coach Stubblefield for his hard work and determination over the last two-plus seasons to move our basketball program forward through a new era for DePaul Athletics. Unfortunately, we did not meet our goals.”
A national search for the next head coach at DePaul will begin immediately, per the release. Special assistant to the head coach, Matt Brady, will serve as the interim head coach in the mean time.
Among the early names linked to the job are former LSU and current McNeese State coach Will Wade, Oklahoma coach and Illinois native Porter Moser and Grand Canyon coach Bryce Drew, the former Valparaiso star and coach.
“Will Wade and Bryce Drew both would be fits,” one industry source said.
