Hubert Davis is off and running in the transfer portal with former West Virginia guard Jonathan Powell announcing his commitment to the Tar Heels on Tuesday.
Powell — the 6-foot-6, 191-pound freshman guard from Dayton (OH) — showed flashes his freshman season at West Virginia. He averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while making 23 starts for the Mountaineers. The most impressive part of his game? Three-point shooting. Powell made 64-of-182 (35.2%) of his shots from deep in 2024-25.
Powell is ranked the No. 89 overall prospect in the transfer portal by 247Sports and No. 116 by Evan Miya. The guard will join a few talented class of 2025 prospects — Caleb Wilson, Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis — as a newcomer on North Carolina’s 2025-26 roster. Davis is looking to build more of a contender after barely making the NCAA Tournament and being bounced in the first round in 2024-25. “6-foot-6 with upside. Big-time catch and shoot guy. Wing. gravity guy who will be as good as the pieces around him that get him shots.
Not much of a shot creator or passer. Needs to improve his handle.”
