Tamir Jackson has decommitted from UAB. Can DeMarcus Cousins be far behind?
Jackson, a 6-foot-2 senior shooting guard at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, says he has decommitted from Mike Davis’ program.
Jackson, a Paterson, N.J. native, says he’s now considering Miami, Penn, Harvard, Virginia Tech, Rice, Davidson and Arizona. UAB is still an option.
“I don’t have a favorite,” he said in a text message.
Jackson is close friends with the 6-10, 250-pound Cousins, the No. 1 center in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals who is rumored to be considering a decommitment as well.
“I don’t know about him,” Jackson said.
Cousins had a short list of Missouri, Kentucky, Kansas State and UAB.
Jackson said he had no timetable for making a decision.
He committed to UAB in April, even though others thought he could have gone higher.
Jackson averaged 14 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists for a St. Benedict’s team that finished 24-1 and ranked No. 2 in the nation behind St. Anthony of Jersey City in several major national polls.
He dropped 29 points on Brandon Jennings and Oak Hill Academy, then No. 1 in the nation, last December in a nationally televised game on ESPN.
“He’s the one that killed us tonight,” Jennings said that night. “He hit open 3’s when it counted, and that’s one of the reasons why they won.”
Jimmy Salmon, director of the Playaz Basketball Club, has been quoted as saying that “Tamir Jackson is the most under-rated guard in America in the junior class.”
