SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Memphis coach John Calipari says he will help facilitate Jeff Robinson obtaining a redshirt year for Seton Hall.
“Whatever we’ve got to do to help that process along, we will,” Calipari told me at the Hoophall Classic where he is watching 6-5 Memphis commit Xavier Henry and uncommitted senior big man 6-11 DeMarcus Cousins, who now lists Memphis as his favorite.
The 6-foot-5 Robinson transferred from Memphis to Seton Hall and must sit out a year before suiting up in the second semester of next year. Calipari said he could get a medical redshirt because of a bad back, or a redshirt because his grandmother died.
“It could be because of his back and him having to leave,” Calipari said. “When his grandmother passed away, he never really got right from that point.”
Calipari said Robinson, a former Gatorade Player of the Year who helped St. Patrick of Elizabeth win back-to-back Tournament of Champions titles, would help Seton Hall next year.
“I told Gonzo, ‘You’re getting a guy who can score and do the other things,” Calipari said, referring to Pirates coach Bobby Gonzalez.” Jeff is a great rebounder, shot blocker . He’s just an athlete.”
